Some could say that the most influential language is the most spoken one. Or is it the oldest?
To put some light on this issue, a study conducted by a MIT team last year analysed the prominence of the languages of the world in different categories, such as books, Wikipedia and Twitter. They used samples like 2.2 million books that represented over 1.000 languages or tweets sent by 17 millions of users on Twitter. Once the information was collected, they created an interactive map with the results, focusing on the translations from one language into another and connecting them.
Yes, English was the first language when talking about translations in all three data sets, followed by other languages such as Russian, German or Spanish. Have a look here and discover the map.
Cesar Hidalgo, who led the research explains it to us:
At Bespoke, we love languages, so we will be back soon, on the meantime, if this inspired you to learn another language, you can check our courses here.
